Last year, AMD introduced the Renoir APU processors in the form of the Ryzen 4000 family. Among the efficient units, we dealt with such systems as AMD Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Ryzen 7 4800H or AMD Ryzen 9 4900H. Throughout 2020, however, we did not get any notebook model that would be equipped with one of these processors and a graphics card at least NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070. The most efficient configurations, as they have already appeared, had at most GeForce RTX 2060. For people who wanted to switch to an AMD processor with Zen 2 cores, this situation was not very comfortable. Top graphics were combined with worse in terms of energy efficiency, Intel Comet Lake-H processors. Admittedly, last year there was a translation of this state of affairs. However, from the beginning it was unconvincing to many people.
According to the information we have found, Intel and NVIDIA had an agreement signed last year, under which it was not possible to prepare laptop configurations with AMD Ryzen 4000 processors and graphics cards at the GeForce RTX 2070 level and above.
AMD Ryzen 5000 - the premiere of Cezanne processors for laptops. Zen 3 architecture enters the top notebooks
In July last year, there was information about the alleged limitations of AMD Ryzen 4000 series processors. It was precisely the number of PCIe 3.0 lines that were dedicated to graphics cards. The Renoir APUs were compatible with the PCIe 3.0 x8 interface, which means that a maximum of 8 PCIe 3.0 lanes were dedicated to the dGPU. Some OEMs admitted that these limitations (Intel offered 16 lines for the graphics card) reduced the maximum performance of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 graphics cards and above. For this reason, there was not a single notebook in this configuration on the market. From the information we have come across, it is clear that the said reason was only a smokescreen and not the real reason.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 - specifications and technical aspects of the new Ampere cards for laptops
One of the OEMs finally secretly admitted that the real reason for this was an internal agreement between Intel and NVIDIA, under which the most powerful graphics cards from the Turing family could only be combined with 10th generation Intel processors. Unfortunately, we do not know exactly what conditions and / or amounts were at stake, but the whole thing must have undoubtedly concerned large amounts, since no OEM broke out and prepared laptops based on AMD processors. Interestingly, this year's AMD Ryzen 5000-H (Cezanne-H) processors also have a maximum of 8 PCIe 3.0 lanes for the graphics card, so theoretically, you could use the same excuse as a year ago. The wide range of AMD processors for 2021 plus Intel's ongoing problems with the implementation of 8-core Tiger Lake-H45 chips led to a situation wherethat some laptop manufacturers broke with their earlier arrangements, including NVIDIA itself. We already know that ASUS and Lenovo have broken out of this circle. Other manufacturers are also preparing their offers of laptops with AMD Ryzen 5000 and powerful NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000 cards. The only manufacturers who will continue to stick to Intel and NVIDIA RTX 3000 chips in one set will be Dell and Razer.
