What Is Density

Density is the physical property of a substance that is the amount of mass it has in units of volume. It is the density of a substance is usually measured by kilograms of mass per millimeter (kg/m3) as well as grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3).

In the construction industry density is an important quality to be considered for the substances like cement and aggregates, sand and steel.

Cement is a binder material that is used in mortar, concrete as well as other construction processes. As we mentioned previously the density of regular Portland cement (OPC) that is the most commonly used kind of cement employed to construct, can be found at approximately 3.15 grams/cm3 or 3,150 kilograms/m3.

Steel is a widely used building material that is employed to reinforce concrete structures and also in structural steel columns and beams. The steel's density is about 7.850kg/m3, or 7.85 g/cm3.

Knowing the densities of construction materials is essential to ensure the correct quantity of material is utilized for any given project as well as to estimate the weight and quantity of construction materials required.

Standard Relative Aggregate Density

The standard aggregate relative density may be described as the mass divided by the same volume of liquid similar to water.

So, Relative Density = Aggregate mass / weight for the same amount of water

Aggregates that are used for general construction are in variations of 2.4-2.9 with an average weight between 2400 and 2900 kg m3.

Density of Sand

Artificial Aggregate Density

The Density of Silica Fume

Silica's specific gravity is 2.20. Silica fume can be found in an the form of a reformulated version with the bulk density of 200-300 kg/m3.

Densified by the bulk density of 500 to 600 kg/m3; it is made up of micro pellets having a bulk density of 600 to 800 kg/m3.
