AMD Raphael AM5 details leak out​

Gamers Nexus revealed alleged AMD internal slides they had received back in March 2020. Those slides feature details on AMD’s yet unannounced product codenamed Raphael, which is to be the first Zen4 based desktop CPUs series.

The media has decided to withhold the information till confirmation from other sources is available, however, no one else was able to confirm the details that were mentioned in the slides, which is why GamersNexus has never published them. Things have changed when ExecutableFix has begun releasing Raphael/AM5 details which were more or less in alignment with what GN has received a year ago.

This slide might be interesting for another reason, it lists a rumored codename of Warhol, which is believed to be a Zen3 refresh of some sort:

There is, however, some disparity between the new information and what appears to be an internal presentation from 2020. For starters, the TDP of new Raphael CPUs is now expected to go higher, up to 120W, whereas the old slides have listed up to 105W TDP. What may certainly be interesting is that GamersNexus’s slides also list gaming notebooks under the Raphael series, which was not speculated before. At this moment it is believed that Raphael will be offered alongside Phoenix APU, which is also to feature Zen4 core architecture.

The slides also confirm a codename for Zen4 CCD which is Durango. According to this 2020 slide, Raphael would feature Zen4 CCD made in TSMC N5 process technology and CIOD3 in TSMC’s N7 process. The slide also reaffirms previous rumors that Raphel would feature on-chip integrated graphics, which would be Navi2 based offering ‘entry level desktop graphics performance’.

Another slide showing AM5 package features details on CIOD3 and dual CCD Durango configuration. As the slide says the secondary CCD is optional. It does not show a triple-CCD configuration though (which was rumored by other sources). Moreover, it also suggests that each CCD has up to 8 cores and 16 threads, which is a further confirmation that CCD core configuration would have not changed in comparison to Zen3 CCD.

Another slide shows ‘Raphael AM4 SOC’. It is unclear if this refers to a low-power APU designed with AM4 support in mind (which would imply Raphel could also launch for AM4 socket in some form), or it simply shows wrong and or outdated information. Regardless of this fact, this slide also goes contrary to a recent report that Raphel supports up to 28 PCIe lanes.

All this data is being compared to recent ExecutableFix reports who revealed the design of the upcoming AM5 (LGA1718) package and Raphael’s integrated heat spreader.

ExecuFix went a step further and also revealed that Raphael would only support DDR5 memory (which again is contrary to the slide above only listing DDR4) and it will offer TDP up to 170W (reportedly for a special edition SKU).



At this moment AMD Raphel is expected to debut in late 2022. AMD revealed at Computex it will begin production of its V-Cache-based Zen3 CPUs beginning this year, which suggests a possible Zen3 refresh in early 2022. This could serve as an interim refresh till Zen4 Raphael starts to roll out.
